Gregorian chant is the traditional sacred music of the Roman Catholic Church. Sung in Latin with a single, unaccompanied melody, it has been used in Catholic worship for over a thousand years. Rather than entertaining, Gregorian chant is meant to inspire prayer, reverence, and a deeper focus on God. Its timeless beauty and simplicity continue to make it an important part of the Church's liturgical tradition. Vatican II stated that, "[Gregorian Chant] should be given pride of place in liturgical services."
